Antibiotic Doxycycline

There is a very useful antibiotic on the market that treats many bacterial infections. The name of this medication is Doxycycline. It belongs to the tetracycline group of antibiotics. Because it can clear up many infections, many medical doctors prescribe this drug.

Doxycyline can be used for periodontitis, urinary tract infections, gonorrhea and Chlamydia. It is also often used for acne and symptoms associated with a skin condition called rosacea. If these words sound complicated, let’s discuss them in more simple terms.

Periodontitis is a gum disease caused by bacteria in the mouth. If not treated, a large build up of plaque can occur and eventually destroy the tissue surrounding your teeth. This could result in the loss of teeth.

Urinary tract infections are very common, especially in women. However men do suffer with this type of infection and it can often be serious. Chlamydia is a sexually transmitted disease caused by bacteria. It is very prevalent in teenagers and young adults who are sexually active. Gonorrhea is very similar although it is caused by a different species of bacteria.

The condition called Rosacea is a common skin disorder that affects the face. The characteristic symptoms are broken blood vessels, red patches, bumps and cysts. People often think they are badly sunburned. While it can be treated with medications like Doxycyline, it is usually a life-long condition. Unlike acne which is very similar, people do not grow out of rosacea.

Doxycyline is dispensed under certain brand names which will be known by your doctor. The drug will attack the bacteria while your immune system is getting stronger. Once your immune system is back in good working order, it will be able to kill the remaining bacteria and you will start feeling well.

Like all drugs, if you are using Doxycyline, you must make sure that you follow your doctor’s dosage instructions.
